My approach
Areas of Practice
Hi, I'm Karen. I created Human Praxis as a space to share my work in learning and development, instructional design, and facilitation.
I've always been fascinated not just by what people learn, but by how they learn.
That curiosity first led me to study educational psychology and continues to shape the way I approach learning today. I'm interested in understanding how experience, motivation, confidence, and environment influence learning, and how thoughtfully designed learning experiences can help people build new knowledge, develop skills, and apply them with confidence.
Throughout my career, I've had the opportunity to work with a remarkably diverse range of adult learners across corporate, educational, and community settings. I've designed and facilitated learning for hospitality professionals in Mexico, supported multilingual newcomers adapting to life and work in Canada, taught adults with developmental disabilities, and facilitated psychoeducational groups for adults living with mental health challenges as they worked toward greater independence and workforce reintegration.
Working with learners from such varied backgrounds has continually reinforced one lesson: effective learning begins with understanding the learner. Every person brings unique experiences, strengths, perspectives, and goals, and meaningful learning happens when those experiences are recognized, respected, and used as the foundation for growth. This perspective is at the core of my work through HumanPraxis.
Through Human Praxis, whether I'm conducting a training needs analysis, designing a workshop, or developing learning resources, I begin by asking questions rather than making assumptions.
What do learners already know? What motivates them? What challenges are they experiencing? What will help them feel confident enough to apply what they've learned?
Those questions guide every stage of my design process. I strive to create learning experiences that are relevant, engaging, and practical—experiences that encourage discussion, reflection, collaboration, and real-world application rather than passive participation.
Ultimately, my goal is to design learning that not only helps people understand new concepts, but also gives them the confidence to apply those concepts in ways that improve performance, support growth, and create meaningful change.
